Some of My Interests

Chess

Amateur Astronomy
The dark skies around Big Rapids are wonderful. Right now, I mostly use my 10x50 binoculars for stargazing. I hope to get a 6-inch MAK one of these days.

Computer Programming

Being somewhat lazy by nature, I like to make my computer perform repetitive tasks for me. In doing so, I have taught myself to code in Applescript, Javascript, Perl, Python, and C++.

Sliderules
I am intrigued by all manner of mechanical calculating instruments - especially the slide rule. The Curta calculator is cool too (but a bit out of my price range).
Fishing

Growing up in Minnesota, I have always enjoyed fishing. Now that I live less than one block from the Muskegon River, I try to get out on the water a little more often.

I enjoy playing a variety of strategy games. One of my favorites is chess. Below is a picture of a set that I would like someday from The House of Staunton. If anyone from FSU is interested in reactivating the chess RSO, please contact me. I'd love to be the advisor.

Reading
In my free time - what little I have - I enjoy reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction works. I am experimenting with GoodReads to track my reading this year.
Sporting Clays
In the summertime, I try to get out the the Mecosta Rod and Gun Club to do a bit of fishing and shoot some sporting clays. Both are good ways of relieving some stress.
Chess Database

I visit many chess websites (when I have the time). A few that I especially enjoy are Idea Chess and Chess Tempo. I have embedded the problem of the day from the Chess Tempo site below. Give it a try!
